About the course

Aim of the course

This theoretical and practical training aims to initiate and familiarize the student with the world of micro-organisms, to show their importance in the environment and their daily interventions in the different areas of life, particularly:

  • The role of micro-organisms in the global and aquatic environment and their role in the life cycle, as well as their different interactions with animals and plants.
  • In human and animal health, through the diagnosis, surveillance and fighting against infectious diseases. Also in therapy by producing molecules of pharmacological interest such as antibiotics.
  • In agriculture, through the protection of plants by combating cultivation damage through the biological control “Bio-insecticides”, and the improvement of plant production through biotechnology.
  • In food safety where micro-organisms may act as contaminants but also as useful allies in the food industry.
  • The teaching of industrial microbiology and microbiological engineering which allow the control and use of microorganisms by humans.

Targeted knowledge

Training in Microbiology aims to prepare the student for the world of work and scientific research and to give him better knowledge in particular:

  • In the agro-food sector by the recovery of agricultural by-products such as waste tomatoes, dates, apricots, olives and others. As well as in the milk and derivatives industry such as cheese, yogurt, camembert, etc.
  • In the protection of the environment by the purification of water from urban, agricultural or industrial sources.
  • In the animal and human health sector through the search for new molecules with antimicrobial activity in extreme environments and their industrial production. Also, by analysing and monitoring of pathogenic microorganisms in hospital or community settings and in the veterinary field.
  • In food safety and the protection of the consumer by analyzing the presence of any germs dangerous to the health of the population, from production to the sales shelves, as well as the control of imported food products.
  •  In the field of education, the knowledge that will be acquired in Microbiology and Biology allows the student to teach in secondary school or in vocational training.

Graduate destinations

Students with a Licence degree will continue their studies within an academic or professional Master’s degree in the various specialties of fundamental or applied Microbiology. Bridges are also possible with other Master’s specialties from the biological sciences sector, in particular biochemistry, genetics, or biotechnology, among others.

Professional careers

After graduation, many opportunities are available to the student in the public and private sectors, specially:

  • Hospitals (Analytical laboratories, microbiology laboratory, blood transfusion centers, etc.)
  • Secondary education and vocational training.
  • University fundamental research.
  • Professional activity and Hygiene Laboratories.
  • Activity in quality control laboratories.
  • Activity in the laboratories of drinking and waste water treatment stations.
  • Private analysis laboratories (medical and food).
  • Employability in the food and pharmaceutical industry.
  • Activity in research centers.
  • Police laboratories and scientific gendarmerie.
